Every Day Is Sundae!

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Just how many people (errr..I mean humans…) have an ice cream sundae named after them?  Ha!  Thought so!  Well, I DO!  Just wander into my owner’s Candy & Ice Cream Store located at 1096 Hertel Avenue and take a gander at the “specials board” on the back wall just above (and behind) the ice cream counter.  See it in the lower right hand side?  MoJo Sundae – yes, that Bad Boy is named after me!  Yes – I do have a hard time holding an ice cream scoop so I can’t make one for myself – but when I show up, one of the girls behind the counter makes one just for me.  I have to give full credit to Tom, my owner (…aka The Boss…) for creating this thing.  He and I worked the recipe so many years ago I can’t remember the exact date…

What’s in it you ask? Well, you start with three scoops of Perry’s

ice cream – you can pick from either Vanilla or Chocolate or just mix them together.  The MoJo Sundae is topped with Peanut Butter Sauce and Hot Fudge Sauce, then you sprinkle some crumbled Oreo cookies on the top, add a squirt (or two) of whipped cream then finish off the whole she-bang with a bright red cherry on top!  Whooeee!  What could be better for you?  Not much!  Certainly beats a dish of dry dog food for dinner…

Actually, I’m not allowed to eat ANY chocolate (especially any one those Canadian Candy Bars or those delicious looking British Candy Bars that just came in…) or have ANY Hot Fudge Sauce – but I have been known to dip my hairy chin into a large bowl of Vanilla ice cream that is sometimes enhanced with a dollop of peanut butter sauce.  After all, ice cream is just frozen milk and we all know how good calcium is for your body.  A small but growing dog needs all the calcium it can get.  And yes, too much Peanut Butter Sauce is definitely not good for my slim physique – but what the heck, you’re only a dog once!  And remember, every calendar year puts 7 years on MY clock – so please don’t tell me it will shorten my life.  I fact, don’t tell me any short jokes at all!

Unless you live in Western New York, there is absolutely NO way you are going to get your hands (or a spoon…) into a MoJo Sundae – but you can still dream!  In fact, that is how I spend most of my days – laying around the house, sleeping and dreaming.  My day is sometimes broken up by an occasional pee break when I can get outside in the yard.

And no, the Boss won’t let me spend any time in his Bella Mia Candy Store due to those pesky Erie County, NY Health Department regulations, but it doesn’t bother me anymore.  I learned long ago to put on my “sad face”, hang around the kitchen after dinner and presto – a scoop of Perry’s Vanilla Ice Cream shows up in my bowl.  Life Is Good!

If you ever get a chance to try my MoJo Sundae, give me some feedback on FB.  I won’t be able to reply, but I always enjoy it when someone reads me the email.

Hey – Gotta’ go and chase a bus!

The Real Charlie Chaplin

The Real Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin chocolates are definitely a Buffalo or regional “thing”. They are not an actual candy bar you can buy from a nameless and faceless dispensing machine. And you won’t find them at Wally-Mart or the neighborhood candy store. But you will find them at the Bella Mia Candy Store. This is a delicious mixture of selected nuts, coconut, marshmallows and Merckens chocolate. Think of what a Rocky Road confection might taste like if you laced them with coconut.

Charlie Chaplin Chocolates Are Delicious!

Charlie Chaplin Chocolates Are Delicious!

This is definitely a unique Buffalo Treat! This product is a much better kept secret compared to the recent national media (manic) focus on Buffalo Wings that occurs almost every year prior to Super Bowl weekend. Buffalo Wings may get a lot of hype – but Charlie Chaplins are the read deal!

And just where did the original idea for a Charlie Chaplin log come from? I looked around but can’t find a good answer – just consider this item to be almost as unique as our Buffalo Sponge Candy. If you ARE from Buffalo, NY (or have lived here for a while, but moved on..) – you already know how good candy and chocolates from this area came be. You might not miss the winter weather in Western New York – but you will almost certainly miss the chocolate.

Marshmallows are a critical part of our Charlie Chaplins and produce the light texture in your mouth while the Merckens chocolate melts. Your first reaction might be – whoa – that’s too much for me but you soon appreciate the light texture. Charlie Chaplins can be very sweet (and sticky and messy if you leave them in a warm room..) – but the combination of high quality ingredients is quickly appreciated by adults and kids alike.

If you think you are up to the challenge, Google around for a recipe and give it a try.   Better yet – avoid thebig  mess in your kitchen and all of the running around town to get the ingredients.   Stop in at  the Bella Mia Candy Store and buy it by the pound.  Delicious!

And here is one last thing to consider: if you order a few pounds (or more) be sure to keep the exposed (or cut end) end covered to prevent any dryness.   Marshmallows don’t survive long when exposed to dry indoor air or heat or sitting in the sunshine.   Better yet – invite some friends and family over after dinner and pass them around your table.   You can be sure that those Charlie Chaplin chocolates won’t last long.
